5 stars. Solo leveling with a little dark element.
I am really enjoying The Primal Hunter so far. The book starts out with typical iseaki, where a new system is introduced into the existing world. Some co-workers are thrown together into a tutorial, and must work together to level up and survive. Jake, however, prefers to be alone and a situation is introduced that forces him to be alone. He spends his time hunting, leveling and figuring out the secrets of the new system. Doesn’t spend any time at all wallowing in despair or acting lost and confused about what is happening.
I’ve read the first nine books as books, and the next two on Patreon as a daily web serial, and here are my thoughts.
Things I liked about the book series:
- MC is intelligent and emotionally stable
- MC makes intelligent decisions
- Great writing
- Some humor
- Fast pace of advancement
- The introduction of “gods” doesn’t imbalance the story
- I like the introduction of new characters in Book 3 (and after)
- I like the events that happen off Earth
- Good use of intelligent pet / companion (and more after)
Things that took away from it:
- In the first two books, other characters seem two-dimensional, but that improves
- We just barely got out of the tutorial after two books
- I don’t quite understand how universe-wide system events can exist
I hope this book continues at this pace and writing quality.
I actually subscribed to this author on Patreon, and am getting new chapters of this book almost daily. I don’t think I’m reading this as a book series any more, but a web serial.
