Respawn, Books 1-3

4.25 stars. Well done so far.

This book has an interesting premise. The main character awakes with no memory of anything about himself. Doesn’t know his name, or anything about why he’s there. He suddenly has a system, and is told he only has 99 lives. To make matters worse, the vast majority of those around him are effectively infected zombies. And some unknown monsters are coming to attack.

So the main character needs to get out of town, as far away from crowds of people, as he can until he can figure it all out. He dies pretty quickly, however. And respawns. Every time this happens, he survives a bit longer, with some minor variations to the environment each time.

This is the premise of the Respawn book series.

Things I liked about the book series:

  • The writing is well done
  • The story is not too heavy
  • The actions of various characters are realistic
  • Only a couple of characters

Things that took away from it:

  • Progression is a bit too slow. 10 hours into the book, he’s still a level 3.
  • The system exists but is not helpful, yet.
  • The bickering between the main character and the girl he teams up with. They could dial it back 50% and the character development would still be there.
  • Book 1 takes a really dark turn near the end. Really dark. And the realization that it won’t be resolved until Book 6 (50 more hours of listening) is a tall mountain to climb.

This book was free to stream on Audible, and was over 11 hours. So I took a chance and listened to it. And I am glad I did. This was well-written and interesting. I want to see the MC (and the girl) progress a bit faster. Or start to understand what is going on. 🙂

How book one turned dark near the end worries me. But the ending was good, and I’ve completed three books of the series.
