Beware of Chicken, Books 1-4

5 stars. Love it so far. I could see myself reading the whole series.

It’s been a quiet July. I’ve found it difficult to get into any book. I tried picking up a book I started previously, and didn’t get into it. I tried a new book. Neither caught me.

But then I started Beware of Chicken, and I love it.

I bought the whole series during a recent Audible sale, and I think this will be a great deal.

The main character was iseaki’d into a new world, to inherit the body of an existing man. He decides to quit the group that he was part of, and move to a far corner of the world for a quiet, peaceful life. Something interesting happens, when his chicken starts displaying a bit of intelligence.

From that point forward, this stranger in a strange land begins attracting interesting characters to him. He gets a cat, a couple of pigs, a rat, and some other humans. It’s a very interesting tale. Engaging, funny, and an endearing story.

There’s not much of a “bad guy” in this, so far. One is developing, but it’s slow. This is a tale of cultivation, and a slice-of-life story. Not a lot of fight scenes or dramatic tension. But that’s OK.

Normally, “cultivation” type stories bore me. Pondering on the nature of dao just isn’t that interesting. But in this series, everything works.

Things I like so far:

  • Well-written book
  • A little bit of romance
  • A nice sense of humor
  • Easy to read
  • Interesting characters

Things that could be improved:

  • The MC doesn’t seem to be developing himself, despite his farm animals all progressing
  • The books switch between several points of view – many major and minor characters
  • Because the names are almost all Chinese, it’s difficult to remember who some of the secondary characters are when they re-enter the story after a long time

I’ve read all the books including the one just released. This is one of my favorite series.
