4 stars. This was an interesting book. Different from so many others in this genre.
BuyMort: Grand Opening: How I Became the Accidental Warlord of Arizona
The premise is post-apocalyptic. Earth is effectively conquered by a shopping empire. You can buy stuff from the system and sell stuff to the system. Very early on, humans discover that you can just point at something and say “I want to sell that”, and a pod will descend from the sky and buy it from you.
In addition to the shopping empire, other species come to Earth for various purposes. And existing Earth species evolve with increased sentience (and they too, can buy stuff). The MC notices the population of the planet ticking down as the days go by.
The writing has tones that remind me of Dungeon Crawler Carl. That book also has a post-apocalyptic premise where Earth is invaded and humans are forced into a system they didn’t want.
Things I Liked:
- Unique premise
- Everything does not always go well
- Some humor
- The beginnings of a romance
- Uncurrent of rebellion
Things That Could Be Improved:
- Some of the voices (characters) in the audio book are hard to understand
- I don’t think the subtitle (How I Became The Accidental Warlord of Arizona) actually is true
- I don’t feel like I really understand the system. “Buy this”, “sell this”… that’s it?
Maybe I missed or glossed over the part of the book where the MC really explores all of the things the system can do. But it seems overly simple.
Like, Amazon.com is WAY more complicated than that.
I bought all of the BuyMort books during a recent Audible sale, and so I feel I have to push on with them to justify the money spent. LOL. I hope the main character gets stronger and we get to see what the system can do.
This book is not for everyone. The MC is falling in love with a snake-woman. But I will start Book 2 now.
