One thing that bothers me when I read it is when a group of kids or young adults are investigating some strange event that is deeply important to the future of all life on the planet. They discover something, and try to tell the adults. But the adults don’t care or don’t know what to do. So the kids keep investigating, and eventually even have to fight the evildoers themselves.
This is the plot of Harry Potter, and perhaps every young adult novel over the past 40 years. 馃檪
It also reminds me of the Scooby Doo cartoon. “I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!”

Another example of this is when the adults are going to do something extremely important, but they bring the kids along on the quest. WHY?!? The kids and adults fight side by side to defeat the bad guys.
I don’t find the actions of the adults in these books to be very realistic. Why would a powerful magic user befriend a 13-year-old? Or why would a 16-year-old be the main person investigating a secret world organization trying to hide its existance?
A lot of these books take place in or around a school.
- In Arcane Ascension, the teenage MC is trying to unravel some mysterious secret order while investigating the disappearance of his brother.
- In Manifestation, the young pre-teen/early-teen MCs emark on quests with two powerful magic users.
