Pet Peeve #2: Doing The Impossible

Fantasy books take place in a fantasy world, and so there has to be some suspension of disbelief to enjoy the genre.

But when an MC performs a task or survives a fight in an impossible way, that breaks the illusion.

For example, in He Who Fights With Monsters, the MC kills two Gold Tier evil characters when he had no magic powers at all, by “eating a spirit coin” and surprising them with an attack.

Like an ant that pushes a human off a cliff in a surprise attack. Even IF the ant surprises you, and even IF they have 50 times their strength, they couldn’t push you off your feet.

And if this is possible in this world, why wouldn’t he do that the next time he has to fight a big monster. He never eats a spirit coin to defeat a monster again…

Or why wouldn’t an opponent do that to him to defeat him in a close fight? An opponent has never eaten a spirit coin (that I can recall) to fight Jason.

I do love that series, so I got over this flaw. But in every fictional world, there needs to be some things that are impossible. Defeating someone that is several orders of magnitude above your level should be one of them.
