Opinion: The Curse of The Daily Serial

Last month, I got onto such a The Primal Hunter kick.

I listened to books 5-8 on Audible. Then I read book 9 on Amazon Kindle.

I couldn’t get enough. I wanted to know what happened to certain characters. So I found there were another 100+ chapters on Royal Road to read. So I read those.

And then I found there were another 50 chapters on Patreon. And so I subscribed and read those.

At this point, I’m all caught up. I’ve read every word of The Primal Hunter publicly available on any platform.

The author, Zogarth, is prolific and puts out one new chapter per weekday. So I actually get an email every day, with the next part of the story.

I don’t even have to go anywhere. The chapter comes to my email. I just read a new email every day.

What I have done is ruin the books for myself. When book 9 comes out on Audible, there’s no reason to buy it. I’ve already read book 9. And when book 10 comes out on Kindle, again, no reason to buy it. I’ve (presumably) read it all.

Yes, the author is getting $10 per month from me on Patreon. So he probably doesn’t regret the loss of income there. But I’ve ruined this series as a book. The Primal Hunter, which used to be a book, turned into a daily email for me.

Unless I can break the addiction. If I can stop reading the emails, maybe in a year the author will have done a whole new book that I haven’t read. But I don’t see that happening.

The only way to kill this is to lose interest in the story itself. I’m hooked for now, so I don’t know.
